I have a dented basket in an athena with a basket weave cone. If I can remove its spider I can get the basket straightened and re glued.
So what did they use to glue the spider to the basket. And how to remove it ?
Thanks.
Srinath.

Probably not possible.
But a solvent like MEK may release the bonding agent, depending on what it is.
These solvents are dangerous and cancer causing, so use them in a well ventilated area and use a respirator designed to stop VOCs (like for painting autos, etc...)
The mfr *might* possibly be willing to say what is used on the spider.
That would tell you what to use.
But in reality you are unlikely to be able to get the basket to be properly aligned. That's reasonably important, since the VC has to be very perpendicular in its motion, especially at higher excursions.
You still need to remove the surround?

I have tried carb cleaner. Its got acetone in it and it didn't make a dent in the thing.
The surround came off quite easily, its rubber and it pretty much came off intact. My next thought to remove the spider is heat. I'm pretty sure I can align it and refit it onto the magnet.
Thanks.

Standard spider adhesive is contact cement, you have to soak it for a few hours with Toluene or Xylene.
Put the speaker inside a large trash bag so you reduce evaporation and every hour re-wet it with a small paintbrush.
Avoid breathing it.
Adhesive will eventually become as soft as just applied and spider can be removed without damage.
Remember that on reassembly you will need to re-center the voice coil so you will probably have to carefully cut the dustcap all around, then reglue it afterwards.

In cheap small speakers adhesive may be white vinylic carpenter's glue; solvent for it is standard pure ethyl alcohol.
