Understanding those switches

Thinking fancy, luxurious switches like Elma, Seiden or Dact, I wonder about their configuration-options...

While I can can imagine a 4-channel switch (in a balanced stereo device), what would a 3- or 5- channel switch be used for?

Common in guitar effects. Two poles switch input and output (to make bypass). Third pole switches the LED so you know if it's in gear.

Switches are used for MUCH more than audio.
