UK based seller of quality class D boards or design files?

Hi folks,

I’m looking to buy a mono class D board about 50W undistorted into 4 Ohms. Any recommendations for a UK seller (to reduce costs of import and shipping)?

The boards could be complete, but unpopulated is OK too.

Alternatively, can anyone recommend an good open-source layout in Kicad? Or a closed source layout with the potential to be licensable?

I’m basically trying to save time by avoiding designing the amplifier board myself, so I can focus on other parts of my current project.

I saw this thread yesterday but kept quiet about my offering because its not really suitable for 4ohms. Into 4R, the output power would be roughly halved due to the on-board regulator current limiting. But you might try a 5A regulator like LT1084 to get more current.

Hi! Actually I’m totally flexible. Nominal load will be 8 ohms but, but sometimes it will venture to 4 ohms or up to 16 depending on the speaker combination. So I was kind of stating the worst case.

Is the output filter the issue too?

I suppose I could use an off board supply? Making the regulator more beefy is a good option too.

So long as your power requirement isn't continuous, the design can be tweaked upwards for a little more power by adjusting (raising) the supply voltage. The TDA8932 itself is good for upto 36V but at that voltage it runs really rather too warm even when sitting idle due to the analog signal stages sipping almost 1.5W. The chip is designed to use the PCB as its heatsink. I run it about 21V so there is some margin left in - the 21V was chosen as about the maximum practical I could get a regulator to deliver from a nominal 24V input supply.

The output filter might be an issue, it mostly affects the HF response - with a lower impedance there's some HF 'droop' and with lighter loads, some boost. The TDA8932 has a minimum max output current of 4A, they don't say what it does typically so this'll be the limit after the regulator's beefed up.

As regards your other questions I'm happy to share design files and even do some redesign if there's potential volume but its made on easyEDA, not Kicad.

I didn’t realise it was one of the PCB heat sinks types. That does make it much more of a challenge. There are some nice thermal via techniques I have seen with heatsink attached on to the underside.

(I was toying with the idea of doing a Aluminium PCB, but it’s one layer only, no vias, and probably too difficult to get all the routing done.)

That’s a kind offer to share or do some designing. I think best place to start is just a stock board. Then see if the extra headroom is warranted. Would you give me an idea of costs? I guess shipping and import is an issue if not UK based. PM is fine 😊
