UHER Report 4000 L - Problem!!

Hi,

I've been posting on Audiokarma, but it was suggested I try here too... I'm having some issues with my Uher...

Now, whenever I set the volume above a certain level, or similarly turn the 'tone' control higher than maybe 9 o'clock I get an incredible (and unpleasant sound). It's kind of a flatulent, squelchy, sqaure-wavey sound. At first the pops are widely spaced, and if I turn the control up more they get closer together - exactly like increasing the frequency on a square-wave oscillator.

It gets crazier when I put it in record - all the controls on front (including source select) become parameters for a whacky analogue synthesiser!!

I made a video (partly just cause it's fun):

But ultimately, I love this machine, and want to be able to use it seriously... So I'm trying to fix.

The only thing I've done have been to clean the contacts in the 'record' slider...

Any advice or thoughts as to 'where next' greatly appreciated!

Best
SD

I think that the two sounds (squelching and rattling) are not connected by the same cause. The first sounds like floating interference of erase head RF frequency on the oscillator as it is similar to AM interference; the other sounds like the beating of bias rejection filter in playback section. Varying of both is what makes a puzzle.
Check the power supply and all voltages departing from there. You might also measure AC ripple on regulated voltages and eventually discover a bad electrolytic capacitor. Alternatively, you may change all of them in the PSU. You will need a service manual or diagrams, some tools, some spare parts and some knowledge and experience in electronics. If you discover fault in the PSU, then the two sounds have had a common cause.
I see no reason why your Uher should not be in perfect working order again. I would start from there for now. Let us know how you are progressing.
