Cap question

I am about to construct a dual mono UCD 180 and have a choice on the power caps... the Hypex Instructions recommends a 4700uF cap..

Anyway, I have a set of Mallory 4800uF 75V (CGS series) and I also have a set of Nichicon 10000uF 63V...

The Mallory's are huge compared to the Nichicons...

I am running dual 28.6 VAC secondaries on the trannies giving around 40VDC/side, so 63V or 75V is just fine...

Anyone out there have any opinion?

I would only recommend the Nichicons. Old caps generally dry out and don't work very well or sound very good either. Also the double value will help a lot. I have used Nichicons in power supplies and like their sound as well as their reliability.

Even if the Hypex recommendations say 4700uF/rail? Isn't there a problem with too much capacitance in general or on the Hypex UCD180 units?

Understand that I am not picking a fight here, just wondering why Hypex would recommend only 4700uF/Rail and the general opinion here is more Capacitance = better sound.

Actually, I would rather use the smaller Nichicons anyway...the Mallory's may be better suited in a Tube Amp, as it is the only place I ever see these huge caps....

hypex claims that too much capacitance can be a bad thing with their amps. many people have agreed. im not sure why technically, but the "sweet spot" is the 4700 or whatever they quote in their specs. they say beyond that, there is actually a loss in performance. but take it for what it's worth, ive seen people go MUCH larger and claim to really like the results.

The Hypex HG supply which they sell for use with both the 180 and 400 has two 10K slitfoils on each rail. The data sheet pdf for the UCD180 lists the minimun as 4700mf. Most folks seem to use a lot more than 4700...
