My bass guitar puts out over 2V peaks easily with volume knob turned up and some finger picking. But playing softly keeps the singnal in the hudreds of mV range. But a guitar played heavily, expecially chords, should be capable of output over 1V too.

Many guitar amps employ two diodes to the +/- rails at the input stage before the first opamp. Thus any voltage peak higher than 1.4 volts will be dumped into the supply.
Ok. So I've got my guitar at work... can I just put the guitar on a scope (to see output) or must it be connecter to a amp?
Will a normal audio amp work aswell, I don't have my guitaramp at work

Yes, just connect the guitar direct to the scope, the 1Meg input impedance of the scope is perfect for a passive guitar!.
Thanks. Tried it.
Built a non-inverting stage with a LM358 with gain 10x.
Plugged this into my LM4780 stereo amplifier.........
Voila.... sound, not brilliant, not good, but there!!!
There is a soft fuzz effect behind the sound of the guitar, but i suspect that it is the prototyping board I'm using!?

What input impedance is the preamp?.
1Meg
It's a VERY basic circuit. Input to GND = 1M
Gain is with a 10K and a 1K resistor. Nothing else
P.S. Just grabbed a LM358. I figured, its a guitar amp, not a Hi-fi.
I wasn't looking for performance, yet. I want to play around with the circuit first so if I blow something its not a biggie!
