I've had one of these since around 1995. I had it modded by a guy who did a lot of recapping and beefing up of power supplies. It sounded good to begin with but he even made it better. Then he did one more round of mods and suggested I try this dumb clamp thingie in place of the little drive wheel or whatever you call it, the thing that slaps down on the disc when you push Close. That was cool for a while, then it started jamming and making electrical shhhhhhht noises intermittently. By this time the modder and I were no longer speaking. I made some remark that upset him, made him feel I was belittling his craft. I feel that he wanted out of the friendship because of our differing value systems. He was a conservative who like air pudding music. I was and remaing a candy *** liberal who still feels the New Deal was a good idea.
Then some nice chappy ln another forum offered to send me for free another busted Rotel RCD-855, also not working. I switched out the transport and put it in the modded one. ERROR message. This was about ten years ago. Since then I havn't touched it. I am not really a DIYer but in these times I am beginning to feel that's the way to go. I know some nice guys I've met around here who are into building their own stuff but this problem is a bit past their expertise.
Anybody interested in talking me through it. Thing about these two boxes is, at the very least I have two working TDA 1541 chips just sitting there gathering resentment.
Another question is, can these be removed to serve as the basis for a dual dac outboard of some design, not mine of course?

What's "air pudding music"?
Perhaps try the old transport in the "new" CDP. That at least should give you an idea of what works. If the mechanics of the new transport is in good nick you might try and swap the bad bits for good. At the very least you could chuck the modded mechanical parts and restore the CD clamp mechaniism to standard.
Okay, first things first; yes, it is well worth getting the RCD855 working, they are a great player with a lot of potential. My system's current CDP is an RCD855 (albeit with a custom tube output stage)!
Exactly how does the player behave when it tries to read a CD?
When you swapped the laser mechanism from the second RCD855 into the first, did you set the laser current and focus potentiometers? If not, this is the first thing I would do. The RCD855's service manual doesn't show how this is done, but the circuit in this player is the same as a CD582 (and many other Philips player), so you can use it's manual.

I shoud make it clear that I am pretty much a novice. I'm just getting back into STARTING DIY ... I think because of the ecconomy but also to rid myself of the compulsion to buy things when I don't have any money.
What happens when I try to play a disc is I get the ERROR message and that's all. The drawer of the transport opens and closes easilly enough, it just won't play.
