Twin mids and lobing

Thanks for the thoughts Andy. Yes, I'd initially thought that i could more or less simulate it, build it and job done.. but actually it has been more interesting (and more complicated) than I'd imagined so i can see myself fiddling around with it for some time into the future.. The point about swapping drivers around in the future is a good one as well; my budget does seem to be inching upwards so I'll either need to keep a cap on it or else make sure what i buy is reasonably flexible should i want to change stuff about.

Cheers

I made vertical measurements on my speaker in mt and in mtm configuration. There is a diffrence. Below xo at 3,3kHz up to 2kHz the mtm response drops. I could not measure more than 15¤ angle up and down. Each pair of lines is comparable - I shifted various angles to make mt to mtm comparison easier. Overall level at 5, 10 and 15¤ gets lower by increasing angle. More wobbles can be expected at even larger angles.

More single vs double mids problemacy

Distortion is really different, single being really much worse! Here is a closeup of an old outdoor measurement. dB is actually quite loud, but nothing special (dB not calibrated). Same distortion can be seen in all my measurements unless those with low level when ambient noise floor masks everything. measurement axle is middle of tweeter in both. Waves sum well at this fq for a pair.

What is causing this? Is it just the driver getting strained?

I do believe so. The 3rd harmonic rise is normally indicative of motor related distortion, but not only. Perhaps not enough faraday shielding? All else looks good being ~ -50dB down.

If you compare other driver sizes this peak drops in frequency as the size increases and rises with even smaller drivers.

You feelin any better today?
