tweeter recommendation

Hi, new to the forum, I'm going to buy a set of tweeters to replace blown ones in my old polk towers, I plan to do a full build 3 way tower eventually to replace the towers I have, any recommendations for an all around tweeter in the 100-200 bucks range, I was leaning on the scanspeak tweeters as I was impressed with the scans be tweeter that I use to replace old seas reference tweeters, there are so many scanspeak tweeters available and I have no clue which one to choose, I prefer bright, shimmery highs. the seas Ive heard in my car and audio conventions seems a little bit laid back for me. Thanks!

Welcome to our hobby. In which a gifted amateur can do as well as the so-called pros. 😀

Say this quietly, but it is true. The sound you get depends as much on the crossover as the drivers: DIY-Loudspeakers

I would take on any well-designed tweeter and get a goodish sound.

This is a £7 cone tweeter called a Monacor HT-22. It doesn't have great dispersion off axis, but in the sweet spot will blow you away.

This is the SEAS 19mm metal dome:

Another competent performer.

You should really be asking yourself what will fit easily as a replacement. Because tweeters come in a lot of sizes like 94mm and 100mm and 104mm faceplate. I would prefer 8 ohms for the easier load to the amplifier, but really with a bit of skill on resistors, you can make anything work.

I can't think of a bad tweeter from SB Acoustics, Scanspeak, Morel, Vifa or SEAS. We've been doing this stuff for 50 years. We've discovered that small tweeters should be crossed over quite high like 4kHz, bigger ones lower like 2.5kHz. Higher order crossovers have less distortion. But that's about it. How hard can it be? 🙂

And yes, this looks like a good one, albeit the impedance needs raising: SB26ADC-C000-4 :: SB Acoustics

I have also had a good time with Morel tweeters.

this alu dome tweeter gets rave reviews on PETT. Nice response SB26ADC-C000-4 :: SB Acoustics

Agreed... Used them already in a few designs, for their price they are unbeatable.
Actually -for my ears- they sound better than many previously tried domes costing 3-4x more. According to measurements it is one of lowest distortion dome tweeters regardless of price. One thing to note: since it is no-ferrofluid type with resonant chamber, you'll need a higher order crossover (preferably 3rd) to avoid the Fs hump.

... When used in a two way crossed at about 2 kHz. But since it has low Fs (680 Hz), when used in a 3 way with Fc above 3 kHz it could be used a 2nd order filter. Since it has no FF, 1st order filter isn't good...

Agreed again.. 🙂 I use them crossed at 2.2k with 3rd order filter. The more adventurous type can try to dampen the (empty) resonant chamber with a little wad of cotton wool gently stuffed into the bore of the center pole piece. This makes them sound even cleaner.

Lots of love for the sb26adc which is good to know. Anyone compare it to the coated version, sb26cdc which looks to be the same price but seems to push the break up slight higher and has a slight downward slope from 10-20hz?

Edit - doh, Bill got there first, responded whilst I was typing!

And the winner is SB Acoustics: SB26ADC-C000-4 :: SB Acoustics

As a true Liberal, I have to mention this tweeter is made by low wages sweat-shop labour in the Far East, doubtless careless of the ecological and Global warming catastrophe about to engulf the World in the year 2060 .. 😱

But an excellent product, as has been discussed before. SBAcoustics-61-NRXC

Me, I'd do a three way anytime. It just works better. 🙂

hi guys, so I got the tweeters, replaced the eminence horns that I was using for the meantime, all I can say is these are a huge improvement over the original polk tweeters, and sounds a lot better than the eminence tweeter, for the price, its definitely a bang for the buck, thank you for the recommendation,
compared to the scanspeak be tweeter I use in my care, scans has more detail, less break up in the lower freq but I its running in totally different platform, actively with a lot more power.
I have a 3 way crossover, so what I did was use this and incorporate a mid to the speaker, the mid I used was a focal utopia 6 inch midrange I has laying around, I was using it before in the car before I changed it, ot was running full active with a processor before, after setting it up with the polk midbass running as woofers, the focals as midrange, and the sb acoustics as tweeter, I got a lot of detail in the sound, but the focal mids is overwhelming, but I like the detail and presence it gives to the sound, I guess its a lot more sensitive than the rest of the drivers or its just that difficult to tame, my question is, if I buy a different mid, to complement the tweeter and the woofers I have, what would it be? any 6 inch , 4.5, or a 3 inch mid that you could recommend? thank you so much guys, should I start a new thread for this question?
