Tweeter or Compression Driver for 2 way build with Dayton 7" E180HE-44

Hi fascinated by the possibilities offered by the Dayton Epique 7" Wide Range E180HE-44 subwoofer.

Anybody got any builds that uses this in a 2 way?

Partial to a horn tweeter or waveguided tweeter.

A minimalist crossover would also be ideal.

Or is this purely for subwoofer use?

Any leads or help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have a high excursion driver with a smaller diameter. This pushes the crossover frequency up relative to the 'average' DIY waveguide/CD 2-way. Dome should be possible, preferably not a smaller dome.

Don’t be fooled by the tone sweep response curve……get that driver pumping with that high walled surround and the cone to surround profile will be VERY DIFFERENT at 1-2khz as will the actual response. The Q of that driver is also pretty high so take that into account as a negative in a ported alignment.

You don’t mention if this is for a near field listening system either…..listening to a CD in a horn in the near isn’t a good time IMO and you don’t need the directivity.

Not much difference in a 7" or a 5" wide woofer IMHO in terms of matching for a 2-way system. The dual magnet Peerless and SS ring radiators and domes should accommodate it reasonably well, with a crossover between 2kHz and 3 kHz if perhaps with some limited dynamic range. Unfortunately I think some of these are going out of manufacture.

This type of compromise is rather common in commercial and DIY designs AFAIK.

I would build a WAW. The efficiency of a horn would be wasted on that woofer. A WAW would let the woofer do what it does best which is reproducing low frequencies, you might even be able to do a first order XO around 4-800Hz with a 3" wideband as the tweeter. That would be an interesting project.

If you like the sound of horns then go with at least a 10" pro driver and build something like an econowave.
