At this time I' m trying to rebuild my old MG1 Imp .
Unfortunately the wires of the tweeter are broken at several places .
So I would like to know if I can replace it with a conventionnal
tweeter . Its caracteristics should be able to drive low frequencies : the initial crossover High pass was 1600 Hz at 6 db / Oct , a sensitivity of 87 dB and a high power admissibility .
Do you think that such a project makes sence ?
I need your advices .

If you wish to restore the speakers, it is possible to replace the wire for the tweeter circuit with new. This is a little tricky, but possible without complex tools. Magnepan can provide repair kits containing the coated Aluminium wire and solder, and other materials such as adhesives you need are easily obtained.
I rebuilt a set of SMGa speakers last year (bass and treble circuits replaced), and the results were very good.
To substitute a different tweeter, you'd probably need to attenuate the signal, as the sensitivity of dome tweeters is often in the 90+dB/W/m range. Of course there are crossover considerations too...

I would think that using a different (i.e. non-planar) tweeter on these would pretty much destroy the sonic signature of the speaker. The low pass to the woofer is at 400Hz, and they are not known for their bass, so what's the point?

Forgot to mention that if you do decide to get the rewire kit from Magnepan, you need to do so before the weather gets cold. The adhesive included in the kit freezes and Magnepan is in Minnesota (cold up there) so they stop shipping the kits in late fall and resume in the spring. Magnepan can tell you specific dates.
