Does a tweeter with only a 1/16" mounting plate really need flush mounting?

A thinner faceplate results in less diffraction, but its shape (e.g. circular or rectangular) and its physical dimensions also influence the severity of the diffraction effects.

Do you have a particular tweeter in mind?

The acoustic wavelength of 20kHz is only 0.66" long.

Yes, a pair of old ADS tweeters I have - faceplate is 3.125 x 4.75, 2.2mm thick

A 1/16" thickness is enough to cause disruptions in the baffle's H x W eigenmodes, so for the persnickety, add a felt ring around it.

edit: If a small baffle, may can get by with open cell foam (fish tank filter density)
