Ryad, a computer DVD-Rom by itself will look better than a regular DVD-Player WITH the TV-3000. Not by leaps and bounds, but it will look better. If your going to buy a TV-3000 anyways for VHS, then it's really up to you. Since your using your son's and not buying a new one, you'll be able to try out both and decide if you want to give your son his DVD-rom back or not.
Capture cards do not have built-in line doublers. Line doubling is a chore for the software, not a PCI card. A video capture card is the PERFECT example of when to use the descaler program. Descaler's homepage has a list of capture cards that it supports. TV-tuner cards (like Hauppauge's WinTV) uses it's own line doubling software, thus making descaler or a hardware line doubler like the TV-3000 pointless.
There's something else I forgot to mention. If you go w/ a standalone DVD player/TV-3000 solution, consider this. Not only are you interlacing and de-interlacing that poor MPEG signal, your going to have to use a composite RCA jack. That alone will degrade the hell out of the signal. With the DVD-rom solution, you won't have to worry about it because VGA is the best way to send analog signals.

Does this do the same as a TV-3000? I have a feeling it doesn't. Is it because this changes the signal to work on a TV (RCA plug) and that is lower resolution than a monitor?

Dazzle 80
I just thought of something.... I have a Dazzle 80 digital video creator thingy that plugs into my computer via USB. I have used this before to plug my DVD into my computer. Will this work? Is it giving me that high resolution signal that you all are talking about.
Is anyone familar with it?
I'm not sure I have the right software with it. When I do video editing, I only get a small viewing screen along with the editing windows. Also no sound.
I don't know how I would get a full screen to view a DVD or VCR tape live (without converting it to an MPG first).

From the looks of that, it does have an imput for sound, as well as composit and svideo. I woul go to their web site and see what kind of srivers/software is avalable. Oh, what is the speed of the computer you wanted to use?
My spare computer is a 950 Mhz AMD.
I am currently playing around with it. I wonder if I can get some software off of Downloads.com that will allow me to use my interface device and view it full screen on my monitor ( instead of just a small editing window)
thanks for all of your help.

Tv-3000 ... dscaller...windvd...ect...
I have tried them all and here are the results....
TV-3000--------
Very easy to set up and connect dvd/vcr/Cable tv to then to switch from different signals just a remote click away. It from the tv-3000 I ran vga to panel. It provided extra color controls I didn't have. And it removed any macrovison I had. Over all it was the simplest to run and improved the image quality.
Dscaller--------
I bought a win tv capture card to try out dscaller...Windows 2000 profession can be a pain sometimes with the registry not allowing permissions on drivers so this took longer to install than I originally wanted...anyway a day later installed and running...I ran my dvd player to cpature card with dscaller and the results were a bit better than the tv-3000 but macrovision came back so this was not going to be an option for me...I different capture card would prob. fix this but I did not see a huge difference in pic quality to warrant this move...plus the overall process to get movie going now required more steps than with tv-3000....
Windvd-------
For a long time I wanted to run a htpc setup but I kept having sound issues...I was not able to get dts/5.1 working...I sat down and spent a day on this and finally got everything working...I installed a sb live 5.1 and using spdif out to my receiver I was able to get dts working. Now image quality is best of the three.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have had the tv-3000 since last July and I have enjoyed it.
Here is how I would rate them:
Rating system 5 best and 1 worst---------
TV-3000-
Ease of use/installation (5)
Pic improvement (3)
Extendablity(5)
price $99
The simplest way to remove macrovsion and add improved control over colors/brightness/saturation and to add vcr/cable tv the tv-3000 is the winner
DVD Rom HTPC-
Ease of use/installation (4)
Pic Improvement (5)
Extendablity (2)
For the best image results dvd-rom HTPC....however you will need a 5.1 spdif sound card +-$60 and a dedicated pc PIII at least.
Dscaller
Ease of use/installation(2)
Pic Improvement (4)
Extendablility (4)
In my test Dscaller fell in the middle on image results but my capture card +-$50 cause macrovision so this was out of the question.
It really boils down to what you have and how serious you are about your setup... I have a dedicated room you can view my room http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5184&highlight=3Dog ....The screen shots in those images when I was running dvd player to tv-3000 to panel...

Great comparison. All though I haven't tried the TV-3000 or descaler, that's exactly the type of results I would imagine. Getting a capture card and running descaler is probably not worth it unless you want to record your VHS stuff to your harddrive.
An MPEG decoder card like the Hollywood Real Magic can solve several problems with running your DVD's on a computer.
- You can have a slow computer. The card does all the work
- You can get a remote for it that works very well
- It gives you DTS & Dolby Digital 5.1 output

PIII 533mhz
Radeon 7200
16x DVD rom
SB live with digital out
Hauppauge wintv go
Elmo 7000 lumen 575 w metal halide OHP
Viewsonic vg150 desktop panel (1024*768,350:1 contrast ratio)
Have done some testing with dscaler and powerdvd. In my experience Powerdvd image quality will beat dscaler hands down on any dvd. Quality of image greatly goes down when using dscaler. I use powerdvd for all my dvd playing purposes. But powerdvd does not allow you to watch tv. This is where Dscaler comes in and makes a massive improvement. Running generic tv tuner software and comparing to dscaler. The difference is enormous where the generic software looks fuzzy and weird Dscaler cleans up the image and makes it look much better.

video problems wih dvd
when lately I use the dvd rom to see a movie I seem to miss a frame every 2 or 3 seconds.
What could this be guys?
I don't think I changed anything to the settings .....
and it's with all the dvd's I have.

I wish there was something that would give the best of both worlds,
DScaler can not record or playback MPG2/MPG1 Files.(don't think it can even record it's own files yet!)
Capture cards (Win-TV type) and TV3000 not compatible.
There is probably something but most likely $$$
And thanks for the review Blockhead!

The TV-3000 and WinTV cards are not compatible but it doesn't matter since WinTV's software does the same thing as the TV-3000.

Interesting. That complicates things. I guess the prefered choice would be a cheap capture card that works w/ descaler while using a cable box or VCR for the tuner.
Lifter,
Yeah I've got a Win-tv card and know it uses a "special" version of DScaler, but the quality is not as good as some other cheaper cards (will at least the second one I bought), but maybe the win-tv card have improved, mines about 2 years old!

test results
Hi all,
Ok, I did some tests today. I borrowed my son's computer and hooked it up.
The picture did look better and the sound was definitely better. ( I had been pluging my multimedia speakers into the LCD panel)
Now, using the PC DVD player, should I be able to adjust the colors and contrast, etc on my computer? Can anyone tell me how?
I still have more tests to run. I don't have that many DVD's to test out.
I saw a DVD drive at PC Club for $45 ( 16X ). I'll probably also pick up a sound card ($15) that will allow me to use 5.1 multimedia speakers. Need to save some money first.
The funny thing about all this is I don't even watch movies that often. Don't have time, kids keep me too busy.

I tested my OHP/LCD system with my son's computer last night. The computer's DVD projection image was much better. The colors were brighter and the sound was much better. I am definitely going to get a DVD drive for my spare computer to use with my projector system. I'll also look for a sound card and some new speakers (probably 5.1). Ka ching Ka Ching! I also found the temperature sensor that will work for my system. It's some kind of panel that has USB connectors and a Digital LCD display for temperature . They said there is a sensor at the end of a wire....that should fit between the LCD panel and the OHP stage. Its only like $14.
I wish I could do something for my VCR image. I don't think I want to fork out $99 for a TV-3000 right now. I'll just have to rent more DVD's.
I actually had my 17" monitor connected and sitting next to me while I was watching Star Wars Episode 2.
Here's a question for everyone:
Would you rather watch a crystal clear image on a small (17") screen or a not as clear, kind of darker image on a 72" screen?
Thanks everyone for all your help. I have lots of updating on my website to do......

Powerdvd lets you set profiles of different color and brightness settings. Just right click screen and go into options. As far as getting a dvd drive for cheap look around for deals that come up. I got mine at bestbuy for $20 after rebate 16x drive and it seems to work great. You don't even need 16x speed unless you are ripping dvd's to your hard drive. I got my wintv go tv tuner card for $30 at officemax. If you look around and wait you should be able to snag some good deals.
I'm thinking about getting the TV-3000 because I don't really have an entire computer to spare for my projector. I was wondering if I were to get a progressive scan standalone DVD player with VGA out, would I still need a line doubler for a better picture or would I be all set?
