Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, but I've been lurking for a while. I decided to register to get some advice concerning what I should build as a speaker system for my TV (although I might end up just using the DAC and swapping the rest of the system with what I have hooked to my PC at the moment, but the space requirements there are about the same). I'm looking for projects that have some documentation and a PCB available as I'm not yet very proficient with electronics, my finished projects so far are 2 Millett MAX headphone amps, a grubDAC and an AMB gamma2 DAC (that one took me 2 attempts though, sad to say). Here's what I've compiled so far:
I'm gonna need an amp (obviously) with a preamp, some speakers and a DAC, as the analog sound from my TV is terrible and really not worth amplifying.
Amp: I'm not sure whether I should go with something like 41hz's Tripath kits or build a discrete amp like Rod Elliott's P3A or his P101, any input concerning sound quality, ease of construction and space requirements is welcome. For the preamp I've been looking at Elliott's projects as well, specifically the DoZ Preamp/P37A, but I'm open to suggestions.
Speakers: I've only found one documented project that looks like something I could use and that fits within my budget: The A/V-1's. A/V-1
If there is some other project of a similar scope, I'd be glad to check it out. And if you guys tell me that it's absolutely not worth making my own speakers, I'd be OK with getting a used pair off ebay or from the thrift store too, but obviously I'd prefer something DIY.
DAC: The only project to suit my needs here seems to be the y1 from AMB labs. I need a DAC that's not too expensive (something similar in price to the y1 is optimal) and that has a TOSLINK input, since that's the only kind of digital audio my TV does. If there's another DAC project with that functionality, I'd be happy to take a look at it.
Also, the amp shouldn't be too big as it will need to fit in my crappy TV rack.
If you have any questions or suggestions or advice, I would appreciate your input.
Thanks in advance,
butizzle
