I have the opportunity to have a granite plinth made at a reasonable cost and am looking for a suitable turntable to form the basis of the project. I intend to fit a high quality arm on a removable tonearm board. I would be grateful for advice on suitable turntables. I am happy to go with the Garrard 401, or Thorens 124 if they really are the best for a solid plinth, but they are expensive! Are there other equally good cheaper alternatives or do I have to fork out for a 410 or 124?

Any of the idler drive decks will benefit - other possiblites are Lenco (gl75/8, l70,l59, g88/99) , Rek o Kut, Presto, QRK and Russco. If you are on a tight budget then an idler drive Dual or Elac/Miracord deck would fit the bill.

Instead of a granite plinth,make that a granite slab,get a rega bearing/sub platter kit and motor assembly,fit a rega RB700 or any other model,cut a corian platter, isolate the slab with some good quality feet,and there you are.

If you can get cheap granite try to get a large granite slab. 30kg or 40kg would not be too heavy. Then buy a bearing and subplatter and motor on e bay. Therer are a lot for sale. Rega are good but you might find an even better one if you are prepared to pay a bit more.
If you have a large granite slab you can connect the motor and bearing directly to the granite.
For a turntable acrylic is good or you could choose to laminate alloy and acrylic which I think is even better.
If you use a rigid arm you may need to decouple that from the granite slab with an an armboard. If you use an arm that includes decoupling such as the hadcock you may be able to connect that direct to the granite slab.

I should have said that the other way to decouple the granite slab form whatever it sits on is to set it on a small bycycle inner tube half filled with air.
