turntable help

I've got a linn basik turntable but with mods ..rega rb250 arm which has been internally rewired and new counterweight , the platter is now full metal instead of inner been plastic
I want to know about the motor electronics I know I can put a hercules 2 on but I don't want to pay nearly £300 is there cheaper alternative or has anyone got a hercules kicking around they don't want also the motor spindle Ideler is plastic will a lp12 steel one be better ?

My advise, and I speak from experience is sell the Linn, keep the Rega and buy a recon Lenco 75. i had a LP12 with lots of mods, not a patch on a good condition 75, Cheers 😀😀

I second this, a well set up lenco will kick a lot of good decks to the curb.
I have hooked for 8 years or more.

Or buy a good Japanese D/D on German Ebay. The engineering of these decks is way better than anything made in the West. A Kenwood KD 990 comes with a super arm, a doddle to set up. I've never understood the hype around the Rega arms either the 250 or the 300.

Absolute speed stability, no rumble, bearing systems that makes Lencos,Garrards look primitive. When these D/Ds came out there was more than a whiff of racist reaction in the west and sadly it stil lingers today.

An old Valhalla would work, and be a LOT cheaper. But you only get 33.33RPM.

The Valhalla if slightly upgraded is a fine device. Replace the 47uF 250V with 220uF 250V. Use a floating mains transformer of at least 50 VA to float the Valhalla ( do not earth the centre tap as it ruins the hum reduction ). In the 230 Vrms region use 230V to 110 V isolated as it is a cheaper option. This requires moving the fuse to the 110 V option on the Valhalla. The Valhalla is not fussy about exact voltage as long as inside international norms, +/- 10 % of 115 or 230Vrms being fine.

The mods give extended life and take the hum from - 41 dB to about - 60 db which overcomes Valhalla's one real weakness. The caps alone being -55 dB. This hum is at 50 Hz or 60 Hz depending on where used. Whilst not a big problem it is one Linn looked at with Lingo. The distortion of Valhalla is excellent at -66 dB. Far below how the motor corrupts it.
