My son needs a turntable. He's currently using an old Sony direct drive he got at a resale shop and it's barely adequate. I'd like to build him something reasonably good, but I've been away from DIY for quite a while other than speakers. I've poked around a bit looking for possibilities for a bearing without much luck. Anyone have ideas or sources?
Or, should I just get him a Technics SL1200 MK II? There's a local one for around $500. Anything new around that price worth considering?
I would describe his interest in vinyl as moderate, but his interest in music is very high. I suspect his vinyl interest is limited by his current setup.

These days that's a good deal for a clean deck that isn't beat up. With a Herbie's mat and a good cartridge, it will be a solid performer.
And, if he decides to sell it, you won't loose any money.

Check out Pro-Ject offerings. Even new ones are not expensive. Replace stock needle with something better and you (or he) are set.
