Turntable bearing diameter: Is bigger better?

Hi,

I am thinking about heading down the Teres-like bearing road. I have noted that various manufacturers use different diameter for the same style of bearing (10 and 16 mm is what I have seen so far).

In my mind, a really large bearing would be better than a small one for a number of reasons.

So let us say for simplicity's sake that I were to construct a bearing which is 50mm in diameter. Is there any reason why it would be better or worse than the smaller dimensions noted above?

Yes there are reasons why biggest isn't best.

Once the bearing is big enough to do the job, any additional
increase will simply yield more noise as the bearing surface
velocities will be commensurately higher. The drag of the
bearing will increase requiring more power and hence noise
from the motor.

Is 16mm better than 10mm ? I don't know but its the right ballpark.
I'd guess the bigger sizes would suit the more massive platter weights.

🙂 sreten.
