Turntable bases

I have a unit of Thorens TD150 TT and is thinking of building a base to mount the unit properly as the original wooden base was damaged.
Anybody have good suggestions for materials?

I made a plinth for a 150 a few years ago with great results. It was made out of slate boards (80x18mm variable length) epoxied together under the top plate of the thorens, so they'd make a U-shape with the opening on the side of the arm board. So, the plinth is 80mm tall, with two or 3 of the boards sandwitched together vertically on all 3 sides. You still get access to the springs and the sound is in a comletely different class to the original. Took me about one evening to cut and glue and i'm not too handy with mechanical stuff.
