Hi guys, this is my first post here so go easy! I've been lurking here for a while, but only just signed up 😀
Anyway, I got given a Telefunken Magnetophon 104 ages ago, and I want to turn it into a guitar amp. It has: EM84, ECC83, EF86 and EL95 tubes which are all original Telefunken. The entire machine works fine.
I can get a clean, loud signal with my guitar wired into the Play head terminals and the reels spinning, but it doesn't trigger the Magic eye so some of the circuit isn't being used in this config.
Should I modify what I have or strip it down and start again? I'm not great with schematics. I should be able to use all the tubes, the EM84 would be a nice touch.
Let the discussions begin

The EM84 is used as a recording level indicator. It should not be active when the machine is in playback mode. FWIW, the playback equalization circuitry is distorting the signal the guitar generates.
BTW, this thread belongs on the instrument "board".

Thanks 😉 I can't hear any clipping, if that's what you mean by distortion? The sound is quite clean and neutral, although I'm only verifying this with my ears, not a scope. I would like to take out what I don't need (tape gubbins etc) and be left with a simple amplifier but it's easier said than done.
