My favorites are
Adire Audio Brahma
Resonant Engineering XXX (both use XBL^2)
IDMAX
JL w7 (as you said lacks surface area but DML is almost as efficent of a motor structure as XBL^2 and still maintains a very flat BL curve)
But if you are looking to go all out save up 5,000 and get you a Parthenon with XBL^2 Technoligy for a flat BL, 82mm one way excursion (for a total of 6.5" of excursion 12" peak to peak), fitted with a 24"x24" panel it moves 2.5" one way with 9v, a flat responce down to 6Hz and and Fs of 7Hz. you cant go wrong. with a 48"x48" panel (the maximum reccomended size) it is capeable of creating more SPL then 3 of the highest quality 18" drivers.

I found out a good driver to add to our list.
It outdisplaces a Tumult.
Avalanche 18" Subwoofer.
XBL^2 with 27 mm xmax.
Fs of 16 Hz.
89.3 dB / 1W / 1m
Someone knows something with more displacement besides Parthenon?

DAMN! linky linky! how much that thiing cost?! i wanna stick that thing in a 6th order bandpass. that thing sounds like the definition of a bassgasm.
Here is your link, btw correct the link on your other topic, it's .ca instead of .com
The driver is from Ascendant Audio...

Are there any Parthenons for sale or is it just a design?

The Parthenon its self isnt a Woofer. It is a motor. The most common aplication is a square of sheet metal as a cone. A spyder and surround arent needed but for maximum controll in high excursion playing it is reccomended by adire.
you can't just "order one up" you have to call adire, tell what performance you want to the technitians and they will come up with a design. They will allow you to go over the design and will tell you the estimated price. you must pay half the estimated price and they go to work on construction.
Adire Estimates that the cheapest thya can make a driver with a parthenon motor is right around 5,000 USD and the most expensive is right around 8,000-9,000 USD.
It is avalable in dual and quave voice coils, it uses a form of XBL^2, and the coils can be made with various ammounts of windings which, in turn , varies indictance, resistance, and powerhandling. The most common aud voice coil design will move 2.5" on one could with 9v. it is really an amazing feat of woofer design.
This is what i dont get about that parthenon, if it has no eclosure what separates the back wave from the front wave?how does it make any sound if it only moves air not displaces it? someone explain.
go get you a big ol 18" woofer. set it on the table and crank it up, no enclosure. it will make sound. just not alot. air cant flow bas enough to completely cancel out a wave. and it can be used in a nenclosure, ill see if i can find such an application.
Wave cancelation depends upon frequency and the size of the radiating area. Parthenon uses a large enough "cone" or shall i say board, that has a long enough stroke to push enough air that it doesnt need an enclosure. Of course, you could put it in one, if there is a surround to go on it.
Those Ascendant Audio subs model pretty good... They only just came out. Here's one of the first owner's impression of the Avalanche 15....

Jerry: For your room, the 15" Avalanche (or the 18's if they fit ) are the way to go. The Avalanche 15 models out slightly better than a Tumult in the same size box on slightly less power.
The Avalanche 15 doesn't roll off as fast on either end. Power difference for the 118dB output level I matched at (where excursion limits are reached) was 1200 for the Tumult, 1000 for the Avalanche 15. At the price difference, it's a no-brainer IMHO. Plus that carbon fiber dust cap!
FWIW, a 65L box is what's recommended, where it definitely has an edge on the Tumult. Yet another reason this would be the driver for your HT.
The 18 wants a big box. 250L sealed. Looking like it might really enjoy an IB alignment.
I should comment, that Atlas 15 models superbly in an infinite baffle! Man, I have to get me a pair of those to replace the Dayton 15" IB drivers I have (which I'm sure will suddenly seem like sad little things when I'm done).

So the Avalanche 15 is better value than a Tumult and the 18 is even better value still.
And the Atlas series has a special second voice coil that lets you configure Qts from .37, .45, & .55 (on the 15") they have XBL^2 and they are very well priced compared to other XBL^2 subs.
I'm thinking of either getting 2 Atlas 15's or 1 Avalanche 18 myself.
Ascendant Audio really brings uber subs into my price range.
