Other than Adire and Eminence I don't know of many companies that make drivers, and if I did, I wouldnt know what to look for.
So my question:
Withough taking enclosure / power requirements into account, what would be the ultimate driver for low bass (<25Hz)?

Ultimate... probably the Tumult, or possibly the latest AuraSound 18". For lower cost options the TCSounds TC2+ and TC9 drivers are excellent. Lower cost still look at the Tempest and Dayton Titanic MKIII.
Blueprints are pretty nice if you can get some. The new TC LMT is going to be insane, 48mm one way xmax? and one damn flat BL curve? yeah its possable.
The new TC LMT looks to be the perfect subwoofer driver...
I wonder how much money it will cost!
Where did you heard of it?

This BL curve is insane, too flat and 46mm Xmax!

I actually heard about it on a car audio site. It had a video along with it too! the things moving like 3.5"

RE audio have an 18" sub with XBL2 technology, effectively a larger version of the Tumult, however it's also a little more stylish with an inverted dustcap - cone in one piece!
JL audio have a top of the range driver which competes with the Tumult which is also very impressive.
AE speakers are bringing out an improved version of the HE15 which will have a flat BL curve, quite possibly a cheaper and sexier competitor for the Tumult.

I don't know how well a w7 would fare in a high level home theatre system. Its biggest size is a 13" too so its lacking some serious surface area, though it DOES have long xmax.
I remember seeinf some Fane pro audio woofer that was 24" diameter, even if there isnt much xmax, thats ALOT of displacement!

linky linky. Thats some MAD surface area going on, if its even got like 10mm xmax, thats alot of displacement.
SD does not always equate to VD. I've seen 24" HE woofers with less displacement than the Shiva!

do you have a link to that?
The Fostex got only about 2.3 mm of xmax, if they could improve it, would be funny. It's about 96 dB / 1W / 1m efficient.

Link? yeah i do actually
Here ya go! http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=074712;p=1
And im aware SD doesnt equal VD. Im just saying making a bigger diameter woofer is the msot efficient way of getting more VD.

Rather than one of these mad >20" drivers, I was thinking more along the lines of a 15/18". Any drivers I should look at, besides the Aurasound, Blueprint and TCSounds drivers mentioned?
Why not use multiples of drivers? ever seen that IB install with the 12 shivas? DAMN that would be loud! the adire guys might even lower the price a wee bit since youre ordering alot. If you dont care for SQ then you could go with some of the extreme SPL subs
MTX RFL
DD 9515
CV stroker
MMATs Juggernauts
IDMAX
Incriminator audio make loud stuff too.
Has anyone ever used an XXX in a home install?

Well besides Adire Audio, RE Audio, Acoustic Elegance (AKA Stryke Audio), TC Sounds, Aurasound, Blueprint, I think we said all the big names...
does TC sounds actually have anything except a prototype using that technology? It said on their site that that press release came out in 03. That seems like QUITE a while for no new news on it. How are they achieving that kind of BL curve, or shall I call it a square? I'm imagining sensitivity is probably comprimised severly, probably something in the range of 83db@1w/1m
They have made a couple of prototypes with that kind of excursion(3hp and LMT are the most advertised, for oss of a better word), the sensitivity is still good(for a high excursion car audio driver) but the Le is very high due to a 3" someodd VC. This affects upper frequency response a fair bit. apparantly you can throw a good 2kwatts at an lmt and itll take it fine, so im not too much worrying about sensitivity. Can you imagine what 4 or 6 of these things in an IB would do? Im still waiting to win the lottery so i can try it out.
Also for anyone whos interested the release date of the LMT has been (i believe) delayed due to the fact that the developer parted ways with TC sounds recently.
And if you think that only the prototypes can move alot of air, look into the current ones that ARE released, they got some serious SPL capability too, though not as linear

high inductance... always a killer. I really doubt that the sensitivity could be anything great if its going to handle that much power, or else it will go to xmax very quickly(even with 3"+ of p-p xmax) and it wont really handle all that power. That is all frequency dependednt though, so for an audible signal maybe its not much of a problem. I like my bass to go to at least 15hz. When you play an infrasonic tone, and there's an "earthquake" people really start wondering whats going on! I myself have an idea for a subwoofer motor that I believe might create an even longer gap with even more flux than ever created. Too bad I dont know enough about femm4.0 to model it.
