Tubes and Solar panels

Tesla was crazy. A genius to whom we are forever indebted, but he was nuts. Now, he was talking about and working on ideas for capturing solar radiation and of transmitting power without cables. (not visible light) If his papers had not disappeared, we might know what he was talking about and move forward.

If you stick a tune in the sun, it will warm up and yes, some of that visible light will be down-converted and radiated back out as heat.

Tesla did experiments in power transmission by setting up standing waves in the atmosphere. He burned up the Niagra Falls generator on one occasion when doing this.

He was able to extract energy at a distance of something like 12 miles and power lightbulbs.

Now there are several problems with such a method of transmission, not the least of which is efficiency.

No laws of physics were violated.

The claim he powered a Pierce-Arrow with a dozen tubes and "an 80-horsepower alternating-current (AC) electric motor" I find incredulous. 80HP is about 6KW. It would take a lot more than a dozen tubes he could buy in a "local radio supply shop" to handle that much power.

I'll stick to accepting the laws of physics.

I think there was a lot more politics in Tesla's exploits than folks think. Think about all this "power beaming" technology, no lines to license, etc. People did as you say also downplay issues of efficiency and collateral damage.

It is entirely plausible that Tesla made use of the alternator to continually recharge the Pierce Arrow’s single 12 volt automotive battery and help supply sufficient power to the electric motor.

Right just like the water powered cars.
