Tube Overdrive

I am thinking about building a tube overdrive pedal.
I want to use a clean amplifier with it. So I want it to have a metal
sound and the output should be about as strong as the output from a
guitar. What I mean is that the sound should get overdriven and then
the output should be reduced to the guitar level.
If anybody has some schematics, please post
them if you can.

No luck with an OD yet? 🙁

Here's an idea - a straight 12AX7 (countless schematics out there) run in "starved plate". Instead of the usual 100+ volts, run it with 40V or so 🙂

Hi Geek,

Have you tried it? I mean running the 12ax7 with 40 volts. I say this because i have build the Mctube posted by Brett and then i've tried replicating the pre section of a champ amp with 175 volts in the plate. Both left me umm... they're ok but not great. Then i read Broskie tried that starved plate thing for a guitarist friend and it worked...some great distortion sounds and also trying difference valves brands made BIG differences in the sound thing which did not happen running the 12ax7 with high voltages. Sounds fun.
Have you got any schematic?

Hi Stalker,

Yes, I have used a 12AX7 at 35 and 40 volts and the sound was similar to the OD in a little Crate practise amp.

Unfortunately, I do not have a schematic - it was just some "breadboard tomfoolery" done one night a long time ago 😀

I'm not a guitar player, but i made it for my brother, who is quite happy with it.

easy to breadboard if you have a 12 volt ps..
