Hello,
I am looking for some help with diagnosing my new Elekit TU-8500. I just finished building the kit. I went through the operation check and everything works except there is a hiss/static sound coming from my speakers. It is loud enough that I can hear it sitting 9 feet from my speakers.
Some Info and might help:
- Both channels are affected.
- The hiss is present whether or not I have a source hooked up to any of the inputs.
- Hiss stays constant no matter what the volume control is at.
- Changed power cords.
- I moved the pre-amp to a different location to see if I was getting interference.
- I swapped in another pre-amp and it was silent.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Is the noise exactly identical in both channels, and not just at about the same volumes?
Then look at the power supply.
Then look at the power supply.

To the OP...Any update on this. I'm thinking of ordering one but would like to know the outcome first.

I have been busy this week and have not had a chance to work on it. I plan on taking the boards out this weekend to do some inspection and re-soldering. This was my first kit but I thought the soldering joints looked good. I took my time and used Cardas Quad Eutectic Silver solder. After soldering was done I used MG Chemicals 4140 Flux Remover and IPA.
Besides this noise issue, the pre-amp sounds great. I enjoyed building it. Everyone says it is a very quiet sounding pre-amp so I am sure its probably me or possibly some component.
That is true. But a hiss in general is a bad specced tube, at least in my experience

I thought that the noise was identical in sound and volume in both sides. When I inspect and re-flow the solder joints, I will pay close attention to the power supply portion of the circuit.
If you swapped out preamp and it was quiet then it has to be tubes. Can you swap out tubes?
I don't have any spare tubes that I can use right now. I was going to order some JAN-Philips 12AT7WC tubes to try out later on but I will order them sooner.
JJ ecc82 tubes came with my kit.
