others use jewel bearings. Example is the Sota star sapphire. The sapphire is referring to the bearing material. I did find a source for sapphire ball bearings, but that was at least one computer crash ago, so I don't remember where. But google is a wonderful tool.
I was looking into the bearings also and since I work in an industry that relies on top notch equipment I went to the folks that know these things. Take a look at SKF, our local rep told me to give him all the specs and he could provide me with what ever I need. We buy thousands of bearings from these folk every year so he was more than willling to work with me.
