Hi, I'm trying to choose between 2 projects for a 2-way stand-mount build. Both using Scanspeak woofers & one of a couple of tweeter choices. One is using the 18W8531G00 7" woofer & the other the 15W8530K00 5.5" woofer. Both can be tuned for low 40Hz & I will pair them with a nice sub. Fairly small room & listening habits are varied from classical to electronic music at low to moderate levels. I want to get the best midrange I can & favor the 5.5" for that, but would like some input from the knowledge base here. BTW I don't mind fairly large cabinets on stands.
Thanks,
Kev

The dispersion would vary greatly between the drivers. The smaller driver allows for a wider sweetspot. It's also easier to make the speaker disappear with a wider disperson and more sidewall reflections. It's up to your preference.
bugeyed,
If the bottom end will be taken care of by a sub, then possibly the smaller driver would have the edge. You also mentioned smallish room (this can be subjective 🙂) and moderate / low volumes.
I have the 15W8530K00 and find it very good in the midrange (and also bass given the size of the driver). No experience with the 18W8531G00.

The differences have been explained. In terms of low frequency capacity: both reach 40Hz, even with the same max SPL, but the 18 does some lower frequencies too. For that the enclosure will have to be more than two times as big too... See the attached response, blue is the 18, black/grey is the 15, both response and max SPL at max excursion/max power.
The 15 indeed will have wider dispersion and matching a tweeter without a kind of waveguide (or a small one) will give better results than with the 18. Put otherwise, if you are going for the 18, sure do consider a tweeter with a waveguide attached.
Just out of curiosity, what designs do you have in mind? That wasn't clear to me. Or will you do the X-over and enclosure design yourself?
[Edit]On the sub thing: my sims were BR but that is moot if you cross them at -say- 80Hz. Why would you tune them at 40Hz? Don't even consider reflex systems but go for closed enclosures. I've added the CB responses at 6l and 20l enclosures.

Thanks for your response. Looking at Paul Carmody's DIY Speaker Pages - Carrera.
Another design uses the Scanspeak D3004/6600 tweeter. I am curious about the Hiquphon OW1 tweeter tho.

I've listened to these 2-way speakers, and they sound very good.
