Trying to add an optical input

Good morning forum.
I'm trying to make my home cinema, but I haven't so much $. The projector will be a diy project, and for the audio I chose a philips HTS-3100 class-d dolby system (link - sorry if it's in italian, but this philips model is sold only here in Italy). This system has received a lot of good reviews, so I decided to put it into my HT. But I have a problem: my projector supports HD 720p, so I want to use it with external HD sources: and here comes the problem. The HTS-3100 hasn't optical audio inputs!!!!! :bawling: :bawling:
It doesn't accept digital inputs, because it has only an analog RCA stereo connection. So I had an idea: could I add an optical input and connect it directly to the internal decoder of the HTS-3100?
I thought that I could connect the optical input where the internal dvd drive is connected to the dolby decoder: in this way, when I try to select the audio source from the HTS-3100 control panel, selecting "DVD" I'll can hear external dolby input, right??
(Sorry for my bad English but it's difficult to explain this project also in Italian!! 🙁 )
Please reply!!!! :bawling: :bawling:
