troubleshooting tpa3116 amp. no sound

Your SMT adapter board seems like it has traces that go very close to the middle of the chip where the power pad is located. That pad is ground. You may have a short from Vcc to ground and hence smoking. The TPa311x rarely ever smokes.
Maybe try this breakout board that was used with success on the TPA3116 thread?
TSSOP to DIP adapter 32-pin 0.65mm pitch

Also, maybe try 3116 chip with power pad up.

Sorry, wish I could help you. I can't see enough from the picture to tell you what's wrong... I can only tell you to check your wiring again and make sure that you are not powering ground pins or vice versa (I know that doesn't help you). I can tell you that the amp will not perform very well with long wires and breadboards to all the decoupling caps. If you can, you should use the 0603 pads on the amp board itself. Class D amps rely on good decoupling for good performance. Good luck!

Try a premade TPA3116 before completely throwing in the towel. The Ybdz and YJ blue black are both $13 ea. or go for a good boxed one like SMSL 36a pro for $50. Then if you still don't like it at least you tried.

I was going to try and breadboard something up like in the OP but it cost more than ordering a mod friendly "blue" board. I compromised with myself...and it was so cheap I ordered 2 ...they were running a special on eBay with free shipping and board was $13.

I already ordered upgrade caps and inductors from mouser for one of them. Unfortunatly the upgrade parts will arrive before the boards....
