I'd like to repair a friend's broken PC speakers, but I'm not sure what the problem could be. At first the sound started crackling and messing with the cable output would fix it for a while. Now there's no sound at all and a ton of crackling when you turn the volume knob. I've replaced the output jack and turns out that wasn't the problem.
The speakers have a subwoofer. The subwoofer has a 5-pin output, so it's hard to test it with other speakers.
Are there any good webpages that explain how I could troubleshoot these speakers?

You might also want to see if one of the wires in the cable (in and out) isn't broken, as can happen if it is bent frequently or bent sharply or pulled hard. But, crackling sounds while changing the volume, especially if there is no input, usually means the potentiometer is acting up, so try what MikeHunt79 suggested. 🙂
I've had similar things happen on an el-cheapo set of 2W plastic computer speakers, however these don't have weird 5-pin connectors.
