Are there any guitar amp designs based around the amps that are compared to SETs, etc.
I thought any tone desires could be handled in the preamp and more carefully controlled if the power amp is less quirky.
I have not done much in terms of instrument DIY, if anyone knows of what criteria are used in selecting cabinet drivers.

Don't know about Hypex, but I think there are some Tripath guitar amps.
Check this site: Tripath Power .
You should be able to find them thru there.
And remember, Google is your friend. 🙂

I was more interested in how to get the right tone, and if it was possible with any Class D modules.
I know the typical solution would be to use a tube preamp and Class D power amp, but I was wanting to do it all without using transistors or tubes.

That's going to be a challenge! 😉
🙂
How about just a black box approach. I know there's a lot of discussion about the difference in class-d verses tripath, .... amps, but sound wise they're more alike than they are different. Overall very transparent, efficient, and reliable. Good "tone" in would be good amplified tone out.
Now "transparent" and "guitar amp" usually don't go together. Electric Guitars usually need a lot of signal enhancing to sound good. So just add signal enhancing ahead of the class-d to get the good tone you want.

how would i enhance the signal as you say?
would it be possible to do a PWM preamp that produced the desired tone?

Are you confused, or just confusing me? 🙂
As has been suggested, consider putting a published guitar preamp design in front of your Class D power amp. There are so many out there you can just pick whatever suits your fancy, here is a commonly suggested one:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
That preamp looks like it would sure do the job! From clean to crunch.
If you're high tech enough, maybe you could use a PC, or Muse Receptor, along with VST plugins to try out different signal processing, cabinet modeling, effects, .... and find what you like, then build hardware to duplicate it.
I ran across this

Looks fun.

There's at least one company I know of that makes Bass-guitar amps based on the Hypex modules.
www.hevos.nl
They do exactly what you propose. They shape the tone with a tube preamp and use a hypex poweramp.

i'd like to avoid the cost of such a premade amplifier
i'd like to build one of the many tube preamp designs for a guitar or bass amp, but think the cost of parts and high voltages are quite a consideration. i suppose many will tell me if i hear the difference between the two i would be willing to pay the cost difference in a heartbeat?

You won't be able to hear the difference
