They were specially designed for transistor instrumentation needing extended LF response, even with unbalanced DC.
I’ve been looking, that’s not correct. Better chance of being input or interstage, but I’m just not sure.

Geez, yes. Anyway nobody remembers the 1960s. And nobody wants to remember those horrid years in the deserts and tundras shooting dynamite in holes and listening for oil.
Those geoformers keep turning-up as the old men die. Here's what they were used for. There was a LOT of this work happening in the 1960s. TI actually developed it long before but a major strike in Texas (Spindletop) dampened the need to explore for oil for many years.
