I just received a Trends TA-10 amplifier , but there is a problem with it. I hooked up the amp (after I switched it to power amp mode and tightened a speaker post that had come loose)and it started to make a high pitched squealing noise and popping from my speakers. I've tried both modes (integrated and power amp) and both give the same results. Nothing looks wrong in the amp, no obvious burning or poor connections. Also after reading the manual, I noticed the DC voltage section. At this time I only measured, did not adjust the voltage pots. On the right channel speaker binding post I get 2V (2000mV) and on the left I measure around 25mV.
yesterday, I tried hooking up the amp again one channel at a time ( again in both modes). This time I did not get any squealing, but hardly any sound and with a large amount of distortion.
today, I tried once again in Integrated mode. The left channel produced the high pitched whining sound, and the right a popping sound with or without input and regardless of volume level. With input I got some music from the left channel but nothing from the right channel.
Right now I'm just waiting for Trends support to get back to me, but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to see what's happening, such as measuring components. Kinda annoying to have this little amp in front of me and not working...
thanks for reading.

Hi Mike,
I wouldn't bother fixing it - just get new one. There is a serious problem there, most likely a fault in the input section. 2V DC on one side is waaaayyy too much.
I like the Trends, but the build quality is not the greatest. They are working on improving it, though.
Sorry you had the trouble, when you get your replacement you will like it, for sure.

If you are curious try to check the bottom side of the PCB for any shorts. Mine had one of the jumper pins shorted with solder and a whole bunch of bad soldering joints that I had to touch up. I don't think Trends does any visual inspection after the wave soldering process. I even had to reseat the two pots to seat properly flat onto the PCB and one of the lead of the LED wasn't even soldered.
Did you get your amp from Sascha in BC ? maybe he can help
Yer, I am in contact with Sasha and David of Trends Audio to improve quality. I am encouraging them to move to an IPC-A-610 Class 2 standard, that would be a first in the audio industry.

If you contact Sasha @ http://www.musical.ca/index.html he'll probably have the tech guys in HK contact you. I had a few questions to which they responded very promptly.
Good Luck, Don

Trends will replace the amp. I did buy from Sasha at Obad Imports. He has been great with the before and after support. Thanks guys!!
I received my replacement and all I can say is WOW!! I never thought something so small can work the way it does 😀
If you want to buy from Sasha at Obad, just do it! hehehe. Nothing but good things to say. 🙂

Mike,
I felt real bad when you got a bum unit, because I know how much you anticipated getting it. I'm glad you're rocking it now!
btw, it would be great if you could send a pic of your little amp in your rig for the gallery:

Trends TA 10.1
Wow, you guys sure have me nervous as I am waiting for my Trends amp to arrive in the next two days. Glad to hear that support is good.

I just got my trends. It is playing music now and sounds OK but has two characteristics that don't seem right. After turning it on this morning, and with no music playing through it, static and a some popping started coming out of the right speaker. But this passed and it SEEMS to be OK now. Also, and this is consistent, after playing for about an hour, maybe less, the LED on the front panel goes out. In the opinion of those of you who have experience with this amp, do I have any cause for alarm??
Trends TA 10 problem
Is the build quality poor or are theese amps tossed around during shipping?

My TA-10 seemed to be packed well enough. And the parts from which it is made seem decent. So I think there may be a problem with manufacturing. They may not have a good process in place to insure that everything is actually assembled and tested properly.
I'm trying to decide if I should send it back to Obad or if I should just fix the LED myself and hope that the audible anomaly experienced earlier was a one time fluke.
Has anyone else heard funny noises coning from their TA-10??
Was it fatal or did it go away?

BTW,
Sasha form Obad contacted me and he is all over this. He is in the process of finding out if I can fix it (my idea) and he also immediately offered to replace it. A guy who obviously stands behind his products.

I'm a huge NOOB with diy but that popping noise could be the DC-offset....
There are two pots inside to change it.

trouble with Trends TA 10.1
Just received my Trends amp and fired it up, it seems to work perfectly and I find the detail excellent. It seems that things like acoustic music and actually strumming of guitars and such are well defined and bass is very controlled and acurate. Verry happy so far"

Just received my Trends amp and fired it up, it seems to be in perfect working order. I am very impressed with the detail and well controlled bass, there seem to be more definition especially with acoustic music also verry pronounced midrange. All in all verry happy.

Yes, It is a great sounding little amp. BTW, I did adjust DC offset. It was already extremely low and is now near 1 mV
