Trends Audio TA-10: Modding Potential?

I have finally completed my add-on box (obbligato nest) and got the thing running. I attached the Trends to the new box and ran shielded teflon wires through the pcb and drilled holes in the bottom of the case to connect the caps. I found that with the shields grounded at the pcb, the amp sounded terrible with huge amount of high frequency noise and static. I disconnected the shields and the sound quality is very good.
Haven't gotten around to adding shields to the inductors and installing the FM's that were left over from my Sonic impact mods.
I plan to try swapping different caps in and out of the box and maybe install a switch so I can flip from one set of caps to another for comparison purposes.
Here's a pic of the completed box below.

Hi

First post an all with a quick question!

Was just wondering where those in the uk ordered their Trends from?

Other thing I'm wondering is if the trends would be powerful enough for a pair of mission 780 bookshelf speakers, which are87db and 8ohms.

Also any idea how much (if any)import tax I'd end up paying if I ordered from somewhere like audiomagus?

Fwiw I'd be using it with the aforementioned mission 780 speakers and a squeezebox 3/modded m-audio superdac 2496 in a fairly smallish room.

Cheers.

I ordered mine at buyoyo , had it in two weeks...

My other speakers are 90db 8 ohms, the sound becomes very ugly on loud passages* small room) , with certain types of music like women voices and metal you hear it's not sounding as good as it should be...

None of this with my 96db 8ohm OB speakerrs 🙂

Import tax was nothing at buyoyo ( low value on documents) audiomagus I'm not sure... I also use a sqeeuzebox *modified*

Good luck, I'd go for something with more power like the winsome labs mouse amp (bit expensive but should be better to)

Robert

Thanks "t" and "doorman", it's not an elegant solution, but I was determined to use the OB pio's and it can't be done within the small Trends case.
It is not really a fair fight in comparing the TA-10 to the Bryston with my current Energy Veritas speakers (dual voice coil 89db). The two amps match up quite well in detail, imaging and soundstage, however the Bryston at around 140 watts, has a smoother top end and has much better control of the woofers.
With my home theater Paradigm Reference Studio 40's at 92 db, it is a more level playing field, and the Trends handles the bass and lower mids very well. Unfortunately these older Paradigms just don't stack up to the newer models in terms of detail and imaging.
In response to Bremen's question, I would have to say it depends at what volume you will want to listen, and the speakers themselves. We have a pair of 88db Nautilis 805's at our cottage up north, which my modded Sonic Impact (same 2024 chip ) drives quite well in a large room. The 805's are a little light in the bass, so we have a sub attached to the speaker outputs to handle the low frequency stuff. I can't get the same volume from the 89 db Energy's due to the speaker design. We tried the SI with a friend's Audio Physic Virgo 2's (90db 4 ohms) and it sounded quite good but of course was no match for his Conrad Johnson gear.

Has anybody tried a different powersupply than the stock one that comes with the amp?

If so what was the difference?

I'm using the battery backup, same as the one in the 6moons review. It's pretty much the same description as in the review. The sound is more laid back and less dynamic, not quite as "black", has a bit more high frequency information, and imaging/soundstage is improved. Overall, the difference is not subtle, and I prefer the battery. I can see many others preferring the original power supply.

Hi Shiznit,

I've been using a 12V, 7 AH, sealed lead acid battery for over 2 years on my SI T-amps and went right back to the battery power supply after putting over 300 hours on the Trend T-amp with the ac/dc power supply that was included with it. As was my experience with the SI's, there is a significant difference in the quality of sound (to the good) when using a SLA battery.

Unlike dweekies experience with the battery backup device the SLA battery (IME) was much more dynamic with better bass. The best part of a battery power supply for me is the smoothness, no discernable AC hash (RFI?). Like dweekie, I feel there is more high frequency detail and better imaging.

Based on my experiences with the Trend and SI T-amps, a SLA battery is a relatively inexpensive and easy modification for these amps considering the amount of overall benefits gained.

Pana FM results......

Hi All,

Just a quick update on the FMs installed in my 10.0. Overall presentation has settled back into a pretty mellow presentation. Bass is deep and overall well controlled. Highs are still there though and not rolled off, but not harsh either. I mentioned that the mids were recessed in my previous post, and I think they still are a bit, but contribute to the overall relaxed presentation. I'll need to do a bit of sitting down in front of the system for a whole CD or two to see what element of fatigue there is, but it doesn't seem to be an issue at the moment.

Where do we go from here? My thoughts are going in the direction of a Pana pot that is shunt modded (if you wanted to retain the original casing), or a shunt-modded Alps in a slightly bigger case. I see Parts Connexion hae 1K Vishay S102s that would work to shunt mod a 10K pot......

Bennic / Trends input caps could be swapped out for bypassed sonicaps - need to get hold of some of those from somewhere. I'm pretty much finished with swapping tank caps unless I get a new TA-10 as the board "cannae tek much more, Cap'n"!

Cheers

Jon

I received the obbligato;s and the PEC volume pot today... Problem is I don't have any desoldering braid yet, to desolder the Coupling capacitors (Bennic). Is it bad to heat the joints and just pull the caps out? And solder the Oblligato's without cleaning anything?
