sounds very normal to me. when an amp has an open input connection it sees everything in it's surroundings, including it's own rf pollution at the input. with a input device (i.e. a cd player) connected most of this airborne pollution is drawn away to earth via the output resistance of the input device. If there is no noise with a close connection than there's is absolutely nothing to worry about.
