This is hardly "unfortunate" -- as fortune implies randomness. I would say that the price mechanism will bring supply into the marketplace, just as the Sainted Adam Smith intends. This is logic.
The last time I saw any 2SJ74 from any supplier was from Reichelt.de at 4€ a piece.
But they are now also out of stock, even at that price.
So it seems really no further supply of 2SJ74s whatever grade, and get 2SK170s while you still can.

That pricing makes absolute no sense. Nada! How can they sell a single 2SJ74BL at $7.89, but a matched pair of 2SJ74BL/2SK170BL at $4.83?
I smell a rat, and it's probably been dead for yonks! If those matched pair pricing is correct and the parts genuine Toshiba then I will be buying all their remaining matched pair stock now! They probably mistyped and it should be $14.83.
I ordered a handful of the matches, hopefully they are genuine. Will have them by the end of the week.
You should be able to measure Idss, gm and noise. There are high Idss p-channel devices out there, but they're very noisy. These are the switching variety which have been relabeled as J74.
