Does anybody have any suggestions for buying a commercial Turns Counter (to 5 digits) or how to build one myself? Thanks for your responses.
How permanent a unit do you want? Or is it for one use?
You can buy turns counting dials. Try MFJ in Mississippi for starters.
You can set up a rotating magnet/coil assembly with an electronic counter.

The easiest and cheapest way is to rig a mechanical plunger that keys the = button of a cheap calculator after you've entered 1+1. I personally use a Veeder-Root mechanical counter actuated by a cam on the rotating shaft. For extra fanciness I added a small ball bearing to the lever on the counter.

I use an ICM7217 chip & 7-seg display to wind transformers on my lathe. It took a bit of soldering to put it all together on strip board.
The trigger can be a reed switch actuated by a tiny magnet on the chuck.
The caclulator trick is much quicker! You could again solder a reed switch across the necessary keypad contacts.

Sorry, Mickeymoose/E. I am relatively new to blogging and did not mean to do inappropritate entries. I wanted to reach as many people as possible in different categories; I assume that is what you mean by "double-posting". Will not do so again. Thank you for the heads-up.
Thank you to those who have responded with advise, it is greatly appreciated. I will check your suggestions out.

Found a great site by Gerry Walterscheid Jr., check it out:
The Engineer's Notebook: Universal Coil Winder
I am going to attempt a motorized version.
