Last time I checked JFETs were more like triodes, not really a current source. If you want a transconductance device (like a pentode) then either use a JFET cascode or a degenerated BJT.
Is it? The frequency dependent load never allows full swing at high frequencies as it controls the gain. Overload performance cannot be equal.
If you run a "flat" load, yes you get full swing to HF. But then you will run it through a passive high-cut. The signal OUT of that hi-cut will have less swing.
The result is essentially the same either way.

My buddy made a modified version of this RIAA premap.
Sounds nice.
He used C3G and 6E5P tubes. First he tried WOT version, but had problems in bass region, as I recall.
