Total noob

So I'm really trying to get into the DIY speaker build/design area and I'm needing some advice. I'm still learning a lot of the lango used and don't understand some of it but I'm trying so be patient please. I have some basic questions up front to ask so please give any advice and recommendations possible. I was thinking of building some enclosures that would use a full range driver (so i don't have to try to use a crossover this time around) and a horned enclosure. I have a broad range when it comes to taste of music and enjoy a good bass line so i would like one that gives a good low end. So now the questions.
1. Best recommendations for driver that produces a good low end while maintaining clarity. Please keep it moderately priced, say around 100 or lower for price.
2. Best enclosure plans for these drivers to take full advantage of their low/mid/highs.
I realize that this is a broad range to get into and I cant give a more specific request but like I said I'm really just getting started.
Thanks again for all the advice y,all can give and ill try to answer any questions you have but please keep them simple for me as I am still learning the terms and language of audio/acoustics.
I'm excited to get going in this field and hope to become a regular on here.
thanks again MIKE

Thanks Dave for the kick back first of all. Also I would be willing to go a little higher for the price on drivers. I've been looking at the Mark audio drivers and would like your thoughts about the pluvia or Alpairs, would they be a better driver than the CHN line. Also I noticed that there are a couple different variations on the frugal horn speaker cabinets (XL...MK3...etc). Which one do you recommend for the drivers. Thanks again for the info. its much appreciated.

The A11ms is very good. But much pricier than CHN110.

If your budget is $100/driver you can almost reach the A11ms.

There are 4 memebers of the Frugel-Horn family, FH-Lite, FH Mk3, FHXL, and Joan. A11ms goes in XL, CHN110 can be fitted in XL, but is better in Joan.

CHR90 & 120 have been getting god reviews. I have done nothing with them yet, a bit biased by the low-endness of the CHRs. Scott can tell us where these work best if he has not already.

Note that FHXL & Joan require a minimum $10 donation to diyAudiocom for the plans.

Probably in excess of 5,000 pairs of FH3 have been built, so far i have only seen 2 Joan (just out of beta).

Would the chr120 work in Joan or do they require something larger? If the 110s work better in the JOAN then i might just go with those. I saw the plans Allen provided for the JOAN i believe but I didn't see the measurements for the internal boards. Also Dave where/how do i do the donation for the plans?

I had chr120 in Joan, and I was lacking a bit of bass... Still was much better than 11ms, that I do not like... Anyway
Fhxl with 10p is way better imo... More energy, more gain, more punch, and goes deeper... Better image, more details, etc etc... Now I have the Joan playing my ems lb8mk2 for breaking in and it s a verry different league...not at all in the same price either... But we are reaching the stars... All stuffing removed.

I have the CHN110 in my own design MLTL and lack no bass at all with it. And it's very close in performance of the way more expensive Alpair 10.3 I also have in different cabinets. I think that will be the best for your budget.

I also heared it in the Pencil, which was also very good, but slightly less bass (maybe not tuned that low). Scottmoose got a MLTL design that is very close to mine (that is not public) that gives similar tuning as mine. Ask him for it.

The Frugalhorn mentioned by Dave is probally also very good. I heared it with other Mark Audio drivers and it lives up to it's reputation. I only don't like it's back loaded, i prefer front ports or the horn to the front of the cabinet as the wall behind it becomes less an issue.

Thanks yves and that fh is great looking....did you double the baffle under the driver or is that how the Joan looks?...sorry if that’s not the right term but I’ll check on the 10p also
Hello, I had to add it because the hole that I made originally was for a Lii silver 8, when switched to the chr120 the hole was too large so I had to use a baffle, now that I changed again for the EMS driver I had to enlarge it again... 🙂

Thanks wax and I might look up Scottmoose for those plans because I didn’t think about the wall issue(still learning) due to my living room being so small...thanks again!
