I was wondering if there is an easy way to upgrade a dvd player so that it can handle video cd's and dvd-r and rw.

I have this same player and same problem. Did you ever resolve this? I have been reading thru several forums and have heard that
1) if you change the bitsetting( or booksetting) to DVD-ROM the Toshiba will read DVD+R discs. I have tried doing this but have not been able to verify this.
2) You can adjust the Potentiometer to enable the player to read all burnt media. I am actively trying find out how and if this will work.
Please let me know if you have had better luck.
