Could any one please give me a hint of what kind of toroid core (material, size OD, ID) is required to build a mains transformer with .5 to 1KVA spec?
I have research it on the web and found some info from several sources however none of it tells me which type of toroidal core should I use for this type of application.
Thanks in advance

Please enlighten me, what do you mean by strip metal?
I was planning to use regular insulated copper (magnet) wire probably awg 14 size.
Thanks

He thinks you intend to make you own core.
Why do you want to wind a toroidal transformer? You can probably find one surplus or even retail that is close enough to your needs. They difficult to wind and you need a special bobbin at least.

Yes, that is the plan to wind my own coils. Because I can adjust the secondary for the required VA and secondly I would like to build several power amps and the mains transformers are quite expensive.
About 35 years ago I use to wind toroids for a living while attending EE school but at the time it was only a job to put me through school not paying much attention to the details specs for these monsters. So winding a toroid I do not see it as a hugh task what I would like to know is if anybody has an insight on which kind of toroids (material, size, permeability, etc) are used for these monsters.
Thanks

i'll pay a 1.2KVA 50+50Vac toroidal transformer about 140€, it's competitive to build it yourself? i think no...
Hi,
buy a secondhand 1.2kVA 45Vac +45Vac for 60euros and add some windings to convert it to 50+50. That's cheaper.
Then add a 10V winding for relay supply then add 8v +8V for the regulated front end supply then .....
Try to buy that new for 140euros.
