Hello. I'm trying something unique. I'm sending a sound signal to a speaker. But I want the sound to stop when I insert a USB drive into USB female port. The port isn't connected to a computer. It's free-standing—just a plain old unpowered piece of metal.
How can I accomplish this? A micro toggle switch inside the USB port? Some kind of spring that keeps two wires apart when the USB goes in? There isn't a way to use the USB port outputs themselves, right?

You can mesure the power output given by the +5VDC and toggle a relay.
It needs a bit of electronics.

Hello. Thanks for the reply. The USB female port actually isn't powered. It isn't connected to a computer or any circuitry. It's just the raw metal and plastic pieces.

Analogue Source definitely was not the right place for a thread on this topic, I have relocated it to Everything Else.Only safe way I can see to do it would be to drill a small hole through the back of the usb socket.
Then insert a pin, that is pushed by the usb stick.
Then other end of the pin then actuates a normally closed switch into the open position.
Any other way of doing it involves electronic circuits.
