Hello,
Can a full-range speaker be put in a very small cabinet for a sattelite speaker in a surround sound system? Ideally, the cabinet will be around 5x5x5 inches, no bigger.

Yep. But it'd need to be small. Soemthing like a 2in or 3in Tang Band or Fostex would be about your limit. Don't try square dimensions though or standing waves will be a problem.
I have made (and use) small satellites for my home cinema system. The are quite small (~ 4 x 5 x 6.5 inches external) with an internal volume of ~ 1 litre and a sealed box design. They use the Visaton FRS8 full range driver (not sure about the availability of this in the states, but in the UK its cheap and had a pretty flat frequency response.
I'm very happy with them and just thought I'd share and encourage you to go for it!! I guess the only thing is that they are not very sensitive and so you are never going to get very loud sounds from them, but they make watching a film fun for very little cost.

Will work in cabinets from 1 litre to 2 litre (does not need to be 3L).
🙂/sreten.

I'm also interested in this because I sort of started
with adapting some small cabs from a mini system in the
early days of my adventures with this hobby.
At that time, Speakerbuilder had a series on making
small cabs (really small) for the Tangband WS 871's
and also some car speaker mods.
As with my first project with the mini cabs, these were
open backed. GM and the rest can tell you the theory
about open backed speaks. My mod to the mini
system cabinets was with the Fostex 127e. I ran
them that way for quite a while. But I don't know of
any followup to the project in the Speakerbuilder
magazine
