Well, its doubtful if it sounds good, but probably OK. It is Pulse Width Modulation amp which is a class D amp or digital amp. The package size is not workable by most DIY'ers unless you can do SMD/SOP work. Not to mention the additional requirements to incorporate the chip into a working circuit. IMHO there is to much involved to make this chip into something useful when there are so many other monolithic amps to experiment with.

It appears that the Philips TDA8924 is better than the TI ..

The TAS5121 only has one channel, whereas the TDA8924 has two, (with same or slightly higher power). The TDA has better specs for most parameters. Not sure about sound though. Applications seem to be home cinema, which for some brands means: 'doesn't have to be so good as real hifi'. And since 'real hifi' has to be extremely good sounding, they could be right .. 😉

This is just a higher level of integration around their existing Equibit chip line, and from what I can see in the datasheet isn't really a full integration - this is just the output stage, which you'd still have to couple with the modulator.

The Equibit stuff is used in the new Panasonic receivers that are getting pretty good 'bang for buck' reviews, as well as the high-dollar Tact digital gear, which is truly world-class, so this stuff has the capability to sound good.

TI has never been my favorite company, but......

They did buy a good line when they snatched up the company that made the Tact series. Supposed to sound good, maybe not "world class". Main limitation is they don't offer much above 60W.

Unless you want to roll your own, wrt to the H-bridge.

If you want to annoy the apps engineer in that group, he is an old audio buddy of mine.

Somehow, he may not appreciate me giving out his e-mail address to the entire forum.

all of these new chips that have come out have their signifigance in the audio world and maybe not meet the purists heart in fidelidty or architecuture....but they do serve as a great tool as we approach the digital domain.....I for one cannot build a 5.1 system for tv viewing as good as the system I store bought for the fraction of the price......as with the GC amps....learn from it and try and make it better and not sit and knock it.

Jewilson,

If you correctly read what DWK123 wrote, it was the Tact stuff that he was defining as world class NOT the Panasonic- If you are going to attack someone perhaps you should learn to read better first.:hot: It is more persuasive in that you don't look more ignorant than the person you are attacking:hot:

The Panasonic Receiver's are great for the $$ there is no question about it. I have not seen this quality for sound at $300 that I can remember. I hate receivers, but I just wanted to see how a CL.D amp might compare to my passive setup. There are certainly tradeoff's,but I would not dismiss the chip before trying one.

Bob Villa was on the other day and I just caught a piece were he said stay tuned for the SOTA Soundsystem. I wasted 5mins of my life to see a TV Tuner, Panasonic A\AB Receiver and some form of junk speaker's. The owner was proud I guess. After that I thought people really do believe they get SOTA for $1K.

OTOH rich people have systems they do not even know how to work. Amazes me.

Oh BTW I use to work for Sylvania who had a relationship with Phillips. I own a few Phillips prdts.. The thing with conglomerates I learned is that high cost and mechanical\electronic components do not always equate to performance. By that I mean I would rather spend $400 for a good piece of reliable equiptment which displays good audio performance then pay for a piece by the same company that cost $2000 and has lack luster performance. And I see this all the time. Price to Performance, there is a great disparity with big conglomerates as opposed to specialty manufactures in audio generally.

The Panasonic unit is one of the trickle down performance units that seldom happen, but to those who know enough to spot a good unit should use if they need it. The CL.D amps that are out there and are high priced are not worth over $1K IMO.I'm not a cosmetics lover I guess, just give me the sound. Not that there is anything wrong with the way Cos. price them, but they are just not worth it to me when I know what the chips go for.

Like it or not CL.D revolution is happening for everyday components. Now I hope I can get a great analog section with a CL.D Amp for under $500.

Just thinking
