With the 394A, as Gianluca mentioned using the grid solo drops the PIV from 1250V to around 350V.
stupid thing to do, this can turn diode into arc tube. that means charged cap can anytime blew through tube back into winding. with big caps you risking maybe explosion.
your fault using things way,they were not designed.
very old hg diodes did not had the filament shield (naked), and their ratings were low because of that.
Why not use them as synchronous rectifiers?
