My nextdoor neighbor drives a Bentley classic, but he still needs to renew tires and brakes, his H2 Hummer is likely to fall apart sooner.

The SA/12e has 68 TO3 output devices of 250W each per channel, makes 17,000W total Pd, the load fraction of the output stage(s) is so low that it may outlive you.
Refreshing the electrolytic big cans will be due after 20 years, an exchange of 2 times 250,000uF will be costly.

new capacitors, different sound?

The old ones will be worn down, or as good as there.
The heftier the amp, the bigger the difference of a re-can, ime.
Why i gave the car analogy, old tires on a 2-1/2 ton car constitutes a bigger problem.

Going through regular channels, an exchange of 16 let's say Cornell Dubilier CGS electrolytic cans in the 40kuF whereabouts range will easily amount to €2K

Yes, but the question is: new capacitors, different sound?

New caps? better sound is the answer. Dont even doubt it😉 If it was me, I would simply swap the caps, with Rifa's of same (or better) rating. At least as good as originals, probably better:xeye:
The low notes get flabby and tired, with worn out psu caps.

🙂
