Hi all,
i 'm a rookie in electronic. 😱
But i have heard rumors that I/Vconversion by transformer can loose "punch and slamm" respect transitor conversion.
Is it true? 😕
I have 2 explendide Sowter tranny for Push/pulll applications ( dac 1e have 4 dac chipset current output custom by BLADELIUS ( '95-97 about)
Another one,
if i swap the transistor for I/V and go with Sowter , which signal level can I expect? 😕
Lower I suppose, so I need anyway an amplification stage,am I right?
( i would be pleased with a half 6N6P anodic output - 14,5 x cathode bypass mkt. )
Finally, seems to me that the regulated series power supply is nothing special so I think to swap with another box - separate - with a chocke input PSU.
suggestion? 🙂
Every comment will be very appreciated 🙂

Hello,
For me the transformer converter it is not an option. The transformer will act like a low pass filter but with a lot of distortion.
In the same time the tube amplifier will generate distortion too but many people like this type of distortion.
Depends on your taste.
I personally prefer a low pass filter made from standard, controlled and high quality parts not based on some uncontrolled parameter of a hand made component.

Hi,
So, in your opinion, AudioNote and Company produce subjectivelly pleasure distortions??😕
I'm satisfied from my standard dac 1e , BUT if I can ammeliorate...................just do jot want to risk to lose SLAMM and PUNCH!!😀
Some tubes distortions I appreciate as in my preamp or monotriode zero feedback .😎
thanks🙂
Cheers
Others opinions are welcome🙂

It's really difficult to say anything meaningful without the exact reference of your Sowter's transformers and a schematic of your DAC. I've searched a bit and couldn't find anything.
Would you know at least the references of the DAC chipsets used ?

earlier versions of the K&K RAKK DAC used a transformer for IV conversion. TI PCM1794 I believe.

Yes Inertial, in my opinion it is only about "subjectively pleasure distortions", but it only the tastes of each one and, what is the music....

THANKS GUYS,
THE THRESHOLD DAC 1E EMPLOYED 4 CUSTOIM BLADELIUS 1 BIT CURRENT OUTPUT DACS CHIP.
IT'S ONE OF TYHE BEST(IF NOT THE BEST ABSOLOUTE) DAC WHICH I HAVE EVER HEARD ;-)😎
THANKS
CHEERS

Sorry Inertial,
I was not refereed to your DAC, I was referred to generally speaking audiofils caprice.
I'm sure that you have a very nice DAC, maybe one of the best available.
And regarding of your first question, You need to try, because only in this way you will see if it fits to your taste.

thanks dear sesebe,
you ar eright, ONLY I want have, if possibl emutc impression from more technicians...🙄
for example: why transformer I/V conversion could be cause loss of punch and slamm respect transistor conversion??
Very interesting question, don't you think??😎
Cheers 🙂

Hi Inertial,
Answare to your question: Low pass filtering.
The bandwidth of a transistor/resistor/OP based I/V convertor can be very high and it is well controled comparing with the bandwidth of a transformer based I/V convertor were the bandwidth depends very much of the material and manufacturing style and vary from one piece to another. The harmonic ratio is changed and will lead to changes in sound, not always in the right direction.
Imaging that you want to made a high quality I/V converter but based on a low speed OP (eg: 741). How will be the (quality of) sound?

The bandwith of Sowter's transformers made especially for DAC output is sufficient not to be a problem (some are flat to 0.25dB up to 50khz).
I'll say it again. Since we don't have sufficient data (the dac output stage schematic, the dac chipset datasheet), it's impossible to say anything meaningful. Just enjoy your DAC as it is.
