Threadjacking

The "Nine Transistors" thing is amusing - I've since read the stories that back then there were only six transistors needed to make a transistor radio (I think it was a rather standard schematic just as tube radios used the "All American Five" 5-sube schematic), and manufacturers added extra transistors (which were nonfunctional floor sweepings which did nothing in the schematic) just to advertise they had more transistors than the competition. I recall about age 10 looking inside a hand-held transostor radio trying to figure out what does what, when I saw these two transistors that each had two leads soldered to one PCB trace. I asked my cousin, who was then or later became a Georgia Tech student, why that was, and he said it looked like they were making diodes out of those transistors. But no, looking back now, I'm sure they were dummies.

But yeah, I've heard old "early" transistor radios are collectible. Replacing electrolytics with new ones is sure to improve performance and future life expectancy (5000hrs @ 105C should last about 50 years in that application, making it work 100 years after it was first made - who knows if there will still be broadcast AM stations transmitting by then), but that may well degrade the value and desirability among collectors. They're funny about that.

Man Eats Cocaine From Brother's Butt, Dies

Man Eats Cocaine From Brother's Butt, Dies - Kansas City News Story - KMBC Kansas City

A South Carolina man's brother died after police said he was forced to eat cocaine hidden in his brother's backside.
Both brothers were taken into custody on allegations they had drugs in their car.
But police told Charleston, S.C., TV station WCIV there were additional drugs hidden in 23-year-old Deangelo Mitchell's backside.
Officers said Deangelo Mitchell convinced his brother, 20-year-old Wayne Mitchell, to swallow the ounce of cocaine to hide the evidence. He died soon afterward.
"It's sickening," North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt told WCIV. "I got upset when I saw the thing. I was pretty shocked on it."
Deangelo Mitchell already bonded out of jail on the drug charge, but now police are looking for him again on charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Tom --- I'm a little concerned about your posting! I mean we all know that these kind of things go on in the world but to seek it out and to repeat it to your comrads on this forum smacks of well, a slightly demented mind. I have watched your comments for some time and for the most part your have exibited extensive knowledge of DIY audio. But this is another side of your persona that I dont think should be let go on the public at large. It was fine when you showed endless pictures of speakers with perodic spinkles of pop stars thrown in but frankly I wonder what is going on in that mind of yours?
Is anyone else concerned.

And on to a more family-friendly topic, even if it's a little technical...

I've been poking around today in (among other things) the FET-based designs of Nelson Pass, and I'm reminded of a tagline - this was one of thousands I saw on BBS's and Fidonet "echoes" in the late '80's and early '90's before I got on the Internet. There was boardreader software that would insert a tagline of your choice at the end of every message you post, and many people wrote interesting quips they used as taglines. Here's the pertinent one (I know yall have been waiting with baited breath):

MOSFET's Fence and Plumbing - a good source for gates and drains.

i do agree with your assessment however.

the first time i came face o face w/ Ms Spears,

was in a target store in california.

quite the experience.

i asked some people for directions, turns out she was with those same people.

She drew a map and gave it to me.
