Thoughts on desoldering braid

For donkey's years I've had the same spool of the Servisol Soldamop braid, worked very well, no problem removing the solder holding components to the point where they'd drop out of the board. A few weeks ago I replaced it with a new spool and found it rubbish, it just doesn't wick up the solder so successfully. Is this the new, improved, colophony-free, healthy flux or do I just have a bad batch?

I'm tempted to invest in a sucker. 🙁

Have you tried a higher temperature? also, and this really is sub-optimal, with some braided wicks you need to have a small drop of fresh solder on the iron tip to get the solder hot enough to go to the wick.

Perhaps the copper is the wrong gauge for you, also. dunno if there is a difference. Or it could be oxidezed beyond what the flux can handle. tried using a separate liquid or paste flux with your new braid?
