Hi,
I think to start my first speaker project with 3 way active crossover with miniDSP.
I have very basic knowledge in speaker design, crossovers and in audio generally, but I'm willing to learn through the project.
I understand that the Satori drivers are great value for money and got tons of good reviews, so I think on 1" + 5" + 9.5"
1" Satori TW-29-B-B (Beryllium ferrite magnet)
5" Satori MR13P-4
9.5" WO-24-P-4
Current set-up:
Denon Avr-X2400H
OLED TV
PC (Tidal, Spotify & Hi-Res)
SVS SB2000
Elipson Studio Pro (2-way bookshelf)
Does my Denon 7.2ch can be used as amp for the 3 way active crossovers? If it can, Will I be able to add center channel in the future?
I saw Rotel 1066 2nd hand in good condition and decent price - Would it preform better than my Denon? (Assuming the Denon can be used a 6ch amp)
Can I use it with my Denon?
I'm asking because I use the Denon for its HT formats capabilities.
Which miniDSP product I need?
Cabinet:
In other post, forum member LineSource posted the internal volume required for the Satori 9.5" woofer and for the 5", and size and length of the port. Avalon Acoustic style.
I will try to make a cabinet plan by those details.
Does it sounds too much for noob like me for first project?
I looked for kit with those drivers and could not find something that suits me, every kit I got into, I found a compromise for my needs, one of the huge benefits of DIY is to make speaker that suits your needs best.
Any advice and help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Itamar.

You need line level, not speaker level, outputs.
You can always use a miniDSP in a system with separate processor and amplifiers
In receivers it is tricky and rare. You need line level (PRE) outs. I think you have 2.1 pre outputs, just above the L and C speaker outputs.
Best,
E

You're right, the Denon has 2 or 2.1 pre outputs.
I should consider the Rotel 1066 (Used).
If I understand right I would be able to connect the speaker+Rotel to the Denon?
I guess if you didn't mention anything by not doing the project - you believe I would handle it?
Thanks!

Another option...
Greetings to the land that invented copper wire
I too like MiniDSP. I have one but it is not currently in use. For what you might want to do, here is an option that should work with a home theater receiver that has HDMI inputs. If your source is a PC with HDMI out (many boxes like a Pipo X9 can do this), and you use software such as J River Media Center, you then effectively have mini-dsp like control via the software EQ and other audio buggery 🙂 available in the software, and 7.1 (whatever) discrete outputs of the HDMI. I have the hardware to do this but have been too lazy to try it, mainly because I use an external DAC and separate amps.

I recently worked with the MR13PNW-4 and was very impressed.
🙂
Thanks for comments guys,
Soldermizer - I'll take a note.
Nelson - Good to hear another positive opinion. Seems like everyone who works with it are impressed.

Ita, you are trying to do too many complicated things at once for some one who is just getting started and on a budget. May I please suggest (in strong terms) that you back up and try to keep things simple?
I understand the drive to get things done, but man, a 3 way, without crosssover design experience, and trying to spend no money on amps or gear. 🙂 This is not a good combination!
Let's talk about the real issue at hand.
Do you want a mega speaker for cheap? Buy a designed kit.
Do you want to learn a lot? Start by designing a small passive 2-way. The step from Zero to a small 2-way is BIG! Too big for most people to learn about. If you can do that, then the step to a 3-way or fully active design gets MUCH easier.
Best,
E

Ita0101, wellcome!
Your plans look basically very good. Obviously you must collect some more understanding of many stages of the project.
I understood that you still want to listen to multichannel/movie sound too, not only stereo? For this purpose you can easily use your Denon as central controlling unit. Just connet your Minidsp 4x10HD or two units 2x4HD to Denon's line out L and R analog outputs. Then you need six more power amplifier channels for the main speakers. You can use a single 7.1 amp or three stereo amps for that. All other HT speakers are connected to Denon's speaker-outs in normal way.
Avalon style cabinet is ideal. The bass can be sealed or bass-reflex. I suggest that first you make just one ugly proto cabinet from leftover sheets of MDF or plywood. For prototyping you need also the minidsp and measuring microphone (eg. UMIK-1) and an analysis program like REW. You can buy two old stereo amps at fleamarket.
When you get the proto speaker to sound right, you have gained lots of more understanding of how to set up the whole system in a way that you like. Expect some 3-6 months for this!
This is just basic. If you want to feed the minidsp digital signal, things get more complicated. You can do it later on, if you want and can!
Happy journey!

maybe to take a look at hypex fusion, like FA253 which have 2x250W+100W
Hypex Electronics B.V.
don't know would DSP inside those plate amp's would do the trick, but don't know would Satori need a loot of EQ any way...so maybe just simple LR2 would do...(I'm not expert in any way)
I suggest this as I understand that you will have to buy some amplifiers and DSP any way...so...just a idea...

I really want to learn things well, and the idea of educational project before sounds right for someone with basic knowledge like me.
I will take my time to think what to do first -
-- 2 way passive / active xover
Or
-- Prototype of one speaker
The Hypex looks good, Isn't it an overkill for my smallish room? I thought max 125w/75w.
I have already ordered UMIK-1 and a Boom Tripod, it should arrive next week and I will start playing with it in my current set-up.
I have some Car components 2-way that not in used that I can play with 😀😉
Model is Rainbow GL-C 6.2 if someone familiar with.
I found a recommendation for this book in other post:

Are there any good books I should buy?
